Frequently Asked Questions - Borrowing and Renewing Materials

Can I return materials from the other locations here?
Materials borrowed from any of the three Middletown libraries may be returned to any of our libraries: Middletown, Trenton or West Chester in person or at the 24 hour drive-up book drop at each location.

Can magazines and reference books be checked out?
All issues of library magazines except for the most current and bound issues may be checked out. Reference books may be used only in the library.

Can my items be renewed?

All circulating items except videos and DVDs may be renewed twice if there are no outstanding holds on the items or the customer does not have more than $10.00 in outstanding fines. Videos may be renewed once. The renewal period equals the original loan period, three weeks for most items and one week for videos. Items may be renewed in the library on the public access catalog or at home by using the Dial-in telephone renewal line or a home computer.

How can I find out what items are on my card?
There are several ways to find out what items are on your card. A list can be obtained by choosing the "Review Patron Record" or "Patron Profile" options from the library's catalog computers or from home. The information is also available through the Dial-in telephone renewal system.

How can I get items that are checked out or located elsewhere?
To go on a waiting list for an item or to have it sent from another Middletown library, simply place a hold on the item. Customers may place holds from any library catalog terminals or from their home computers. The library staff can do this for customers in person or over the phone. A customer's library card number is needed to place a hold. Videos, DVDs, reference materials, and current magazine issues may not be placed on hold. If an item at another Middletown library location is requested, and the item is checked in at that library, it should take no more than two days, excluding weekends, for the item to be transferred to the requested location.

How do I get a library card?

Anyone who lives, works, attends school, or owns property in the state of Ohio may apply for a Middletown Public Library card. Each applicant (parent or guardian of child applicant) must present two forms of identification, at least one of which bears the current applicant's address.

What are the fines for late items?
All items are 10 cents per day per item, except for CD-ROMS, DVDs and videos. The overdue fine for videos, DVDs and CD-ROMS is 50 cents per day per item.

Where does this card work?
Cards issued at the Middletown, Trenton, or West Chester Library may be used at any of those three locations. The cards are beige in color with green text, and each card has a unique barcode that identifies the registered cardholder.

Why do I need my library card or a piece of identification to check out books?

In accordance with state law, we cannot access or alter a customer's library records without identification from that person.
